The Sun Also Rises: Kauai, Hawaii

EscapeHatchDallas escaped to Kauai, Hawaii last week to check out the golf and restaurant scene.

At Poipu Bay Golf Course, the best site to ever host the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, the course rolls as rhythmically and sensuously as ever along clifftops that drop off to the Ocean. They say it’s Tiger Woods’ favorite, and I can see why.

In Princeville, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., has completed renovating the old Princeville course, which he first routed in 1971. Golfers are in for a major surprise: new fairways, greens and bunkers. Tons of overgrowth that once blocked views of the Pacific are gone; now views are unimpeded.

Noted Hawaiian chef Peter Merriman’s newest restaurant, close to the Grand Hyatt, is firing on all cylinders, only  a week after opening. He sources his beef from the Big Island, and his fish is all local and line-caught.

But the biggest surprise? The extensive renovation of the Kauai Marriott; its Kauai Lagoons is some of the best golf on the island. Want to know more? The full story will soon appear in AvidGolfer Magazine.

There seems to be more happening on Kauai than I imagined. Last time I was there, my wife and I played golf on Poipu and loved it, but we didn’t really like Kauai Lagoons. Guess we will have to go back :)
