For those of you keeping score, we told you back in March, that Velvet Taco was taking over the abandoned Church’s Chicken space on the northeast corner of Central Expressway and Henderson Avenue, just north of downtown Dallas.
Velvet Taco revealed that they’re going to open for business
Wednesday, August 3, this week (serving dinner only for a couple of weeks, then expanding to lunch, dinner and late night “whenever we think we’ve practiced enough,” says Taco developer and co-owner Mark Brezinski. He says Velvet Taco, which inhabits the former Church’s Chicken building on the northeast corner of Central Expressway and Henderson Ave near downtown Dallas, will serve 19 different tacos, one side dish (roasted corn elotes, and one dessert (red velvet cake, natch) “plus a whole bunch of beers, interesting sodas and a killer margarita.” Tacos are priced $2.50-$4. Most are wrapped in corn tortillas made in house.
“As soon as you hear taco, you think Mexican street tacos. But we’re more than that. We use the tortilla as a shell for great flavors from all over the globe, not just cilantro, lime and chopped onions,” said Brezinski, who also founded Tin Star and Bengal Coast. “These are borderless tacos.”
Velvet Taco was jointly developed by Brezinksi and Front Burner Restaurants, the group that also owns the Ranch Las Colinas, Red Dog Right in Southlanke, and Whiskey Cake Kitchen in Plano. John Franke, the corporate chef for Front Burner, also developed the recipes for Taco.

UPDATE: The opening date has been pushed back–the owners now say Velvet Taco won’t open Wednesday, but might open for limited, unpublicized hours later this week as a sort of soft opening.
