Chevys, Corndogs, and Coors: The Hatch Visits Chevy After Dark at the Texas State Fair

Chevrolet invited the Hatch to the State Fair of Texas last Thursday evening for Chevrolet After Dark, where media types and bloggers had the opportunity to get behind the wheels of a few of Chevy’s newest and most popular cars and take them for a spin on their Fair Park test track.

I took the Spark, Volt and Camaro out for a spin then grazed my way through some State Fair fried favorites paired with a few adult beverages. (Nothing washes down fried foods quite like a Coors Light. Some things just belong together on a cool fall night at the State Fair.)

The first car up was the Spark, a mini car that boasts an impressive 38 miles per gallon fuel economy. While the tiny backseat would make it tough to transport many passengers, the diminutive frame is perfect for parking and maneuvering in an urban environment where space is limited. It wouldn’t be difficult to find a parking place on a Saturday night in Uptown in the Spark.

Next up was the Chevy Volt, an electric vehicle that gets a ridiculous 98 miles per gallon. Just press a blue button to start this silent engine that packed surprising power for a green machine. The four door sedan has plenty of leg room in front and back and a beautiful LCD touch screen display that further reminds you that you’re driving a car of the future.

Finally, I got my hands on the star of the test track, a bright yellow Camaro convertible. The small course didn’t allow me to let its horses run, but it was hard to complain while cruising at dusk with the smell of Fletcher’s corn dogs floating in the air and the lights on the iconic Ferris wheel in the distance.
