Where’s John Tesar tonight? In New York City for a fancy shindig. That’s where Esquire and food writer John Mariani are announcing their picks for Esquire Magazine’s list of Best New Restaurants in America 2013, an annual cover story they’ve curated for more than 20 years. An Esquire insider tells the Hatch that John Tesar’s Spoon is on the list, the result of a meal Mariani ate at the restaurant last spring (I’m told he also dined at FT33 and Stampede 66 during his Dallas visit).

Know who else is being honored tonight? Stephan Pyles, whose Stampede 66 also impressed Mariani and, I’m told, also makes the Esquire list. Both Spoon and Stampede 66 opened last November.
