Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group buys the largest Spanish restaurant concept in US with eye on expansion

Irving-based Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group is buying Spanish-themed Barteca Restaurant Group for $325 million. The acquisition lands the steakhouse chain 31 Barcelona Wine Bars and Bartaco restaurants in 10 states and Washington D.C. DFRG says the growth of Barcelona and bartaco has been fueled by a relentless focus on the guest experience.

Barcelona, the largest Spanish restaurant concept in the U.S., with 15 restaurants and three under development, serves local, seasonal tapas as well as specialties from Spain and the Mediterranean. Its wine list of 400 Spanish and South American wines is one of the largest in the country. Del Frisco’s plans to open  between 50 and 100 Barcelona restaurants in America.

Bartaco, with 16 locations and four under development, specializes in upscale street food with a coastal vibe. DFRG forecasts they will open between 200 and 300 Bartacos domestically.

“This transaction directly aligns with the long-term strategy we established for Del Frisco’s when I joined the Board of Directors in 2015,” said Ian Carter, Chairman of Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group, Inc. in a prepared statement. “Barcelona and bartaco are the perfect additions to the Del Frisco’s portfolio, and are well-positioned to deliver a long-term positive impact on our team, guests and shareholders.

Del Frisco’s opened two new Del Frisco’s Grille restaurants in the second half of 2018, plans to sell its Sullivan’s restaurants and will close underperforming Grille locations.
