Lupe Tortilla brings excellent Tex-Mex to DFW with new Las Colinas restaurant
When I next revise my USA Today story of where to go for the best Tex-Mex in Dallas, there’s a good chance I’ll put the new Lupe Tortilla in Las Colinas on that list.
You should put it on your list, too, because this Houston interloper (with restaurants in Houston, Austin and San Antonio, too) knows Tex-Mex.
Like all Lupe Tortilla restaurants, the Las Colinas location makes everything from scratch and doesn’t veer far from classic Tex-Mex. That means you’ll find combo plates with enchiladas, tacos and tamales, all served with flavorful refried beans and rice, plus queso and queso flameado, wafer-thin flour tortillas, puffy tacos, and lime-marinated beef, chicken and combo fajitas (you can add a chick lobster tail if you’re inclined; I’m not).
Everything here is made from scratch, including the stacks of excellent corn and flour tortillas, which are made-to-order and rolled by hand with a rolling pin rather than pressed in a metal contraption.
The prices are reasonable, too. (You could easily make a meal of the queso flameado, which comes with peppers, chorizo and a stack of those tortillas for under $9.)
For now, the restaurant is limiting seating to just 12 people each 15 minutes as the staff ramps up, but the soft opening phase should give way to open seating in a week or so.
