State Fair of Texas announced their 2019 Big Tex Choice Award semi-finalists – and the list includes some truly awful stuff

Thirty-three entries will vie for coveted vendor spots at the 2019 State Fair of Texas, and the list includes some truly awful sounding items.

I don’t know what a “black gold” truffle is, but since the fairgrounds include livestock pens, I don’t want to find out. I’m also not one bit curious about a “pig in a canoli,” “deep fried Mexican mole,” or “deep fried Cracker Jack.”

The 33 semifinalists were selected from 49 entries; each had to have at least one year experience as a concessionaire at the State Fair, which means it’s somewhat rigged from the outset to favor only insiders. Don’t know who the judges were either.

The 33 will be whittled down to a final 10 by another set of unnamed judges. Then, on August 25, Big Tex Choice Awards will be selected from among those ten at a big, public to-do at Fair Park.

Thank goodness I’m judging the blue ribbon competitions for best pie, best Tex-Mex and best breads this year … they’re nowhere near the livestock pens.
