Miami’s “The Salty Dog” doughnutery brings from-scratch bourbon doughnuts to Dallas’ BADlands

Miami’s best migration to Dallas – and its BADlands (Bishop Arts District) – came a couple of years ago with the arrival of Azucar, which instantly became the city’s best ice cream shop. Now Miami punches in with  doughnuts.

The Salty Donut, an outpost of a well-regarded shop in Miami, has opened its first location outside of South Florida. Located at 414 West Davis St. (in the former Red Sparrow Mercantile space), the shop peddles SD’s artisanal doughnuts, coffee, and pastries. The store’s official opening date is June 2, but the shop is open now.

The owners of the Miami shop were featured on Cooking Channel’s Sugar Showdown in 2016. Their winning doughnut: a cream-filled “cannoli doughnut.”

The Salty Dog also sells a well-regarded maple bacon doughnut, a brown-butter cake doughnut, and a chocolate-glazed number crowned with crunchy chocolate pearls. Even better: their coffee beans are Intelligentsia brand.

If you’ve been craving a sweet corn doughnut (honestly, who does that?), you’ll find one at Salty Dog. Or skip that one and go for their season Peach Cobbler doughnut filled with caramelized peaches, vanilla-infused oat milk glaze and  brown sugar/oat streusel crumbles. Me? I’d give the Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake or Sweet Tea + Bourbon numbers a shot.  Because at 6 a.m., why not begin your day with brioche, sweet tea and Garrison Brothers Bourbon glaze, shortbread crumbles and bourbon whipped cream?
