SAVOR Returns to Omni PGA Frisco for Four Days of Chefs, Golf, and Live Music
A food festival set on a 660-acre golf resort in Frisco is, by definition, selling something beyond the food. SAVOR Food + Drink + Golf + Music at Omni PGA Frisco Resort and Spa, 4341 PGA Pkwy, returns April 30 through May 3 for its second year, and the programming is more ambitious than the inaugural run. Whether the kitchen execution catches up to the calendar is a question the weekend will answer. Two of the five events, Friday’s Fork and Fire Grand Tasting and Saturday’s Par 3 Celebrity Golf Challenge, are already sold out. Tickets for the remaining three are available at savoromnipgafrisco.com, and given last year’s pace, they won’t sit long.
Thursday opens with the Masters of Taste, a five-course dinner capped at 150 guests inside Panther Creek Pavilion. Scott Conant, the James Beard Award-winning chef whose Italian-leaning cooking has made him a reliable Food Network presence for two decades, builds the menu. The sharper angle is his reunion with Leen Nunn, Omni PGA Frisco’s pastry chef, who won the episode of Chopped: Sweets that Conant hosted. That’s the kind of specific detail that gives a dinner actual narrative tension rather than just a famous name on a placard. Master sommelier Erik Elliott of Lawrence Wine Estates pairs each course. Tickets are sold in pairs only.
Friday’s Fork and Fire, the sold-out grand tasting, runs open-flame stations across the resort grounds with Esther Choi, Shota Nakajima, Kevin Lee, Kim Canteenwalla of Crown Block, and Elizabeth Blau cooking alongside Conant. At last year’s version of the event, roughly 600 guests moved through the stations, which is a large enough crowd that the quality of any given interaction with a chef depended on timing and patience. John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls closes the evening with an acoustic set, followed by a drone show over the property.
Saturday holds the most to work through. The Grand Tasting is the festival’s broadest event, and the Texas contingent is where it earns its regional credibility. Dean Fearing of Fearing’s at the Ritz-Carlton Dallas is the elder statesman of the bunch, a chef who built his reputation well before festivals like this existed and doesn’t need one to prove anything. Misti Norris of Far Out and Rainbow Cat, Rich Vana of Heritage Table, and Peja Krstic of Mot Hai Ba represent a younger generation of Dallas cooking that’s been doing serious work without much fanfare. The evening ends with live music, dancing, and fireworks.
Sunday’s Margaritas and Mariachis brunch is the most relaxed entry point into the weekend. Anastacia Quiñones-Pittman of Eledi, a James Beard semifinalist whose Latin-influenced cooking has earned consistent attention in Dallas, leads the food side alongside Top Chef winner Gabe Erales of Oído in Austin, Eduardo Osorio of Meridian, Maricsa Trejo of La Casita Bakeshop, and Trey Sanchez of Vaqueros BBQ. A 10-piece mariachi band and DJ handle the room. It’s the kind of afternoon that tends to go long in the best way, or reveal its limitations by two o’clock, depending on the crowd.
Complimentary self-parking is available at the resort on a first-come, first-served basis, with overflow at the PGA District. All events are 21 and over. Ticket prices range from $195 to $1,250 per person. A portion of proceeds benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County.
