Lox on the Rocks: Smoked Salmon Vodka On Way to Texas
The folks at Alaska Distillery in Wasilla, Alaska, already produce vodkas and gin, but last week they started rolling out a fishy version. Vodka is the best selling spirits category, and flavored versions have given the category even more lift.
The five-year-old Alaska Distillery infuses their locally produced ethanol base with salmon caught in the Gulf of Alaska, first smoking the fish then steeping it in grain alcohol. The resulting concentrate is then strained and diluted with vodka to reach its final concentration. The liquid even looks like it’s been infused with salmon.
According to the company, Texas will be the first state to receive the Alaska Distillery Handcrafted Smoked Salmon infused vodka. In fact, the first shipment was sent to Texas on June 16. We weren’t able to determine the local distributor, though. Mixologists who have tasted the brew say it makes a nice Bloody Mary, but don’t try using it in a Screwdriver.
(Guess the Copper River salmon run has been better than anyone expected. Wonder if we can substitute Smoked Salmon elixer for fish oil pills.)
