OT: Beginning today, AT&T will unlock your iPhone so you can use other carriers (US and abroad) on your AT&T iPhone

Beginning today –Sunday, April 8– AT&T will unlock your iPhone so  you can use it on other carriers, provided your account is in good standing and your minimum contract term has been fulfilled. This is huge news for those of us who travel outside the US and want to use a pre-paid SIM when traveling. (Calls made with those SIMs are significantly less expensive than paying AT&T roaming rates.)

Once unlocked, you can use any micro-SIM– provided its carrier’s frequencies are supported.

Here’s AT&T’s official statement on the matter:

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

Until now, customers who finished the terms of their two-year AT&T  iPhone contract were free to change carriers but their iPhones wouldn’t work on a non-AT&T GSM network like T Mobile.
