Portland bar expert hosts an AMA event with crazy good drinks in Dallas on Aug. 12

Jeffrey Morgenthaler, the respected Portland bartender from Pacific Standard known as much for his mentorship as his martinis, will headline a two-part event at Midnight Rambler on Tuesday, August 12.

The evening offers Dallas drinkers a rare opportunity: to sip cocktails from one of the country’s more influential bartenders while asking him anything. Literally.

The night begins with a “choose-your-own-adventure” Q&A, where guests guide the discussion. Want to talk amaro? Ice machines? The ethics of flair bartending? Morgenthaler, who helped redefine modern bar technique with books like The Bar Book and Drinking Distilled, is game.

From 7 to 10 p.m., he’ll join the Pacific Standard bar team behind the stick for a collaborative takeover. Expect the kind of balanced, quietly brilliant drinks that made him a national figure. There will also be signed books, limited-edition Jefferson’s Bourbon swag, and the kind of small talk that reminds you why good bartenders are still the best conversationalists in the room.

Morgenthaler’s visit comes on the heels of his nomination for Best Mentor at this year’s Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards, an acknowledgment not just of his recipes, but of the bar community he’s helped shape.

Midnight Rambler, long known for its subterranean style and cocktail rigor, feels like the right room for a night like this: intimate, smart, slightly irreverent.

If the bars you love are cleaner, better, or more delicious than they were a decade ago, there’s a good chance Morgenthaler had something to do with it. Now he’s coming to Dallas (and bringing his jiggers).
