Sigel’s Free Wine Tasting Thursday, May 13, to feature 90+ point wines
90+ Cellars Tasting
Sigel’s-Greenville 5-7pm Thursday, May 13th
Those of you who joined us for our introductory tasting of 90+ Cellars in March know how fantastic these wines are and what great value they present. This modern day negociant has taken advantage of the current economic slowdown to buy finished lots of wine from some of the world’s top producers who are suffering from slow cash flow. The wines released under the 90+ Cellars label are the same lots as the wineries own labels and represent some of the finest values we have tasted in years. These wines represent excellent values (we know because we sell the pedigree labels at our stores as well!)
Join us at Sigel’s-Greenville (5757 Greenville Avenue) on Thursday, May 13th from 5-7pm as we welcome Kevin Mehra, proprietor of 90+ Cellars. We will be tasting a number of new varietals that we have brought on board as well as tasting the new vintage releases of some of our favorites from the last tasting. For more information on this free tasting please contact David Waddington or Ben Coyle atstore01wine@sigels.comor 214/739-4012
Wines to be tasted:
Lot #2
Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 09 Old Favorite, New Vintage
Lot #16
Pinot Grigio Napa 08
A wine like this makes you wonder why you haven’t tried more Pinot Grigio from California. Most of the fruit comes from a selection of vineyards in Napa Valley and Carneros. The juice is fermented with 20% in neutral french oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel. In the end, 5% of Chardonnay is added to improve balance and texture. Primary flavors of grapefruit and pear give way to more tropical notes of mango, orange zest, and guava on the palate. The wines vibrant acidity is counterbalanced with a rich, full-bodied texture making this wine an ideal accompaniment to grilled chicken or seafood. We wish all Pinot Grigio tasted this good!
Lot #11 Chardonnay McLaren Vale 08
This wine is from a producer that consistently produces highly rated and great value wines every vintage. A component of this chardonnay remains un-oaked for freshness, a portion is fermented in new French oak barriques, to add complexity and mouth feel and then some undergoes a secondary malolactic fermentation, to soften the natural acidity.
“The gold-colored 2008 Virgin Chardonnay offers up a fragrant perfume of pear, spiced apple, and tropical fruit aromas. Vibrant, balanced, and lengthy on the palate.” 90rp
Lot #19 Riesling Columbia Valley, Washington 08 New Varietal
Lot #8 Garnacha Carinena Crianza 07
Garnacha is a grape native to Spain; this wine is from a region of Spain with a wine-making tradition that dates back to the times of the Roman Empire. This wine is estate grown and has been aged 6 months in French oak which allows it the Crianza designation. This lot is one of the best deals we have found and a personal favorite we are happy to share! A complete wine, with aromas of forest fruit shrouded in chocolate, vanilla, milk, coffee, nuts and wood spice. The wine has a broad palate of earthy blue fruits and integrated oak; well put together, ripe and nicely open with a lingering spicy finish.
Lot #14 Zinfandel McLaren Vale 06
The grapes for this estate grown wine come from 30 year-old vines located at the northern foothills of McLaren Vale. The wine was fermented to dryness after which it macerated on skins for 8 weeks, then aged in 1 year old French oak for 18 months.
“The 2006 Zinfandel was sourced from Langhorne Creek. Purple-colored, it presents aromas of briar/bramble, raisins, and blackberry reminiscent of legendary Zinfandels such as the 1977 Lytton Springs. This leads to a full-bodied, smoothly-textured Zinfandel with plenty of ripe, sweet fruit, soft tannins, and a lengthy finish. Drink it over the next 6-8 years.” 90rp
Lot #17 Merlot Napa Valley 07
We love classic California red wine, especially when it hails from a winery with a track record of making award winning wine since the mid-1800s. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc is made from 100% Napa Valley fruit and aged for a year in French oak. Alluring aromas of ripe currant and black cherry unfold into a medley of dark chocolate, mocha and sweet spice on the palate. The wine is rich but also well balanced with supple tannins that linger pleasantly in the finish. Enjoy with roast or grilled meats in a savory mushroom sauce, or simply by itself.
Lot #20 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 08 New Lot
