What I’m Drinking Now: Sommelier Heather Green Loves Jade Mountain’s La Provençale
When you discover an everyday wine you can pair with pasta or pork loin, a wine you can open and serve with confidence, you’ve hit the jackpot.
The Jade Mountain La Provençale is just that sort of wine. It’s crafted from a blend of grapes native to France’s Rhône Valley, grapes you’ve tasted before. Grapes like Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache.
The precise blend shifts from vintage to vintage so the winemaker has the freedom to take full advantage of the best of each year’s crop. The result is always a red wine with juicy dark fruit, some raspberry and strawberry, a hint of smoke, and just enough body and tannin to perfectly complement just about any hearty dish.
A few nights ago, I served the 2008 with chicken and whole wheat penne pasta dressed in a homemade puttanesca sauce, and the match was heavenly. But the Jade Mountain La Provençale would have been equally wonderful if it had been paired with with brisket or pulled pork tacos, or even pizza.
Go pick up a bottle. You’ll find it at Goody Goody for about $18.
