Radar Range: Coal Vines $100 Pizza Features Truffles and Kobe Beef
What does $100 buy you?
A month of iPhone service, a flight to Austin, maybe a bottle of Darioush Cabernet. But, hey, it’s truffle season, so chef Samir Dhurandar at Coal Vines is shaving fresh Alba truffles and Kobe beef filet over a $100 pizza loaded with wild mushrooms and ricotta cheese.
“We’ve only sold a few of these,” said Dhurandar, who towered over our table on a recent Saturday night, feathering our pizza with coins of earthy goodness. “But every time we serve one, everyone in the room asks about it.” Mushrooms and truffle perfumed the entire restaurant. Despite the wall-to-wall crowd, nearby tables went silent, then wondered aloud if they should buy one.
Yep, truffles have jumped the shark, though Dhurandar says the $100 treat will remain on the menu through December. After that, says the chef, “I’m pretty sure all the truffles will be gone.”
