On the Road: The most famous BBQ in Cape Town, South Africa: Mzoli’s Meat
Grilling and chilling. Yep, it’s Memorial Day Weekend. Pecan Lodge is opening in a new Back 40 by the Green Line in Deep Ellum, Top Pot Doughnuts is wide open, and the weather forecast is blue skies and breezes. We Texans like to think we got this bbq thing down, and we do. But at ramshackle Mzoli’s Meat in Cape Town’s Gugulethu township, the specialties are smoke, coals, a hot fire and anything with legs. Hussle up to the line (it snakes from the front door, past the ATM, then down the street), choose your meats from the butcher counter, then walk it back to the grill and give it to the guys who know how to do what they do. Chicken, lamb, pork, beef. It’s the best barbecue party in town, and you’re invited.
Everybody in Cape Town knows Mzoli’s Meat. Here’s why you should, too.
