Jamie Fulton is Brewing Gold & Silver Medals at The Covey in Ft. Worth:

I opened The Covey Restaurant & Brewery on South Hulen Street in Fort Worth in 2006 with the goal of serving excellent beer and food to my local customers.  By brewing on site – right between the dining room and the pub – I hoped to deliver the freshest beer possible to my customers, try new brewing styles, and bring the microbrewery and brewpub experience to Fort Worth.

Within two years, I’d grown my business and created what I thought were some pretty good brews. I shipped off several kegs of my beer to San Diego for the 2008 World Beer Cup.  Every two years, brewmasters around the world submit their beers to an international panel of judges for this “Olympics of brewing,” matching their beers against a tough field of competitors.

It can be easy to think your beer is the best when you’ve brewed it start to finish, from creating the recipes to managing fermentation parameters, so it’s daunting to send your brews to critics.

At the World Beer Cup, my Vienna Lager earned the gold medal for Vienna-style lager, an achievement I could never have dreamed of in 2006.  That a Covey beer could best all other beers in its category from around the world was a surprise, an honor, and a reason to brew more beer!

Demand grew as my beers continued earning recognition in national and international competitions, including the 2009 Los Angeles International Beer Competition and the 2009 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO.  Here at home, the Covey’s customers were drinking beer almost faster than I could brew it.

Earlier this year, around the time my second child was born, I entered the 2010 World Beer Cup.  I submitted nine beers in all, including my Vienna lager – just to see if it would stand up to the competition two years later.

This time, the Vienna lager took the second-place medal.
