A Bottle of $460,000 Whiskey?

Who would pay $460,000 for a bottle of whiskey?

On November 15, Sotheby’s Auction House auctioned off a bottle of 64 year old Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whiskey to benefit charity:water, a nonprofit dedicated to providing clean, quality drinking water to developing countries. The selling price of $460,000 set a new auction record for the world’s most expensive whiskey.

The 1.5 liter bottle itself was hand crafted by the artisans at Lalique to mark the 150th birthday of their founder, René Lalique. This one of a kind bottle was crafted using “Cire Perdue” or “lost wax” technique. This is the first time the famed crystal house has produced pieces using this process in over 80 years. The 64 year old whisky is the oldest Scotch the Macallan distillery has ever bottled, so it would be fair to say a half a million dollars can buy you a masterpiece filled with a masterpiece.

The bottle’s 13 city journey started in Paris and saw the sights in Madrid, Moscow, Singapore among others before landing on American soil in Beverly Hills and ending with its sale in the Big Apple.
