The Covey, DFW’s Best Brewpub, Closed Abruptly

. Great food. Great beer. Great brewmaster. Guess that wasn’t enough.

Despite racking up tons of national awards for his Covey brews, owner and brewmaster Jamie Fulton closed his brewpub and brewery last weekend. Only a few weeks ago, Fulton won six awards at the 2010 Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition, including two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. What a shame:  The Covey’s menu was perfectly suited for Octoberfest and this cooler weather: burgers, fish, wild game, even bison, antelope and kangaroo, all spiced to pair with Fulton’s beers.

This is posted on the Covey’s Web site:

Sadly, I must inform you that The Covey Restaurant & Brewery is now closed. I recently made the difficult decision to close our doors on Friday, September 24th.

In April 2006 we opened for business here on Hulen, and accumulated many loyal patrons and lots of praise for our food and beer.

I am very grateful for the friendships and patronage of the many guests from across the state and beyond. Whether your visits to The Covey were once a year or once a day, I am appreciative of your past business and that you experienced what we had to offer.

I am deeply apologetic for any inconvenience this transition may cause for you. I hope that someone will take over the niche that I tried to fill: providing Fort Worth with world-class, brewed on-site beers with excellent cuisine to match.

My career as a brewer will continue at a new project called Farmers & Brewers in Washington, D.C., which should open by 2012. There I will be able to focus solely on the brewery, which is a refreshing idea after handling the many aspects of running a restaurant for five years! You may visit the original restaurant, Founding Farmers, at www.wearefoundingfarmers.com. Farmers & Brewers will have a similar menu concept as Founding Farmers, the project I’m involved with, yet with the obvious addition of a multitude of brewed on-site craft beers. I hope that one day you will be able to enjoy my beers again.

Chef Sean Merchant will continue to live and work in the metroplex and is planning to open his own restaurant in the area. Stay tuned.

Thanks again. It’s been an incredible ride!

Sincerely,

Jamie Fulton
