Bottle Envy: Malai Kitchen in Uptown Dallas now brewing beer. You’re gonna like them. A lot.
Malai Kitchen wasted no time getting its brews bubbling now that they’ve received their brewpub license.
Owners Braden and Yasmin Wages have kegged two sensational beers with flavors that not only complement Malai Kitchen’s bright flavors, but they’re both well-crafted, easy-to-drink styles with lots to love.
Bia Hoi, a light Vietnamese rice lager, and Thai-P-A, a medium-bodied IPA infused with flavorful Thai herbs, are available right now by the glass. I tried them both and think you’ll like them a lot.
“Yasmin and I discovered Bia Hoi on a trip to Hanoi, Vietnam in 2012. It’s light, refreshing, ridiculously cheap, and an integral part of the Vietnamese culture,” writes Braden in a message to EscapeHatch. “We wanted to share a version of it with our guests. And when we couldn’t find a domestic brewery to brew it for us, we decided to give it a try ourselves.”
Bia Hoi is made from a blend of barley and rice with light Czech hops. It’s a clean, balanced lager that’s malty, spicy and yeasty. You’ll swear there’s lemon and orange peel and white pepper in their, too.
The Thai-P-A is a golden, medium-bodied IPA with a bold hoppy bitterness. The brew master says you’ll find undertones of lemongrass, kaffir lime and galangal in there. I think you’ll also taste yuzu, lemongrass, black pepper and cardamom.
Both beers are served on tap at the restaurant. The Thai-P-A is priced at $6 and the Bia Hoi is $3 – half the price of Malai’s more familiar beers.
