Chef Jeffrey Hobbs Out at Sissy’s Southern Kitchen
By Mike Hiller
Good pick-up by Scott Reitz today, who uncovered that chef Jeffrey Hobbs had jumped out of the frying pan in a press release announcing lunch service at Sissy’s Southern Kichenwill begin September 18 (nbd).
Writes Reitz on the Dallas Observer site, “Hobbs confirms the split, saying he has fulfilled the promise he made to owner Lisa Garza when first opening the restaurant and is ready to move on to other things. He would say nothing else on the record…Chris Ostlund, who has been sous chef since the opening, has been promoted and will run the kitchen.”
Sissy’s was praised by several critics for its fried chicken. (I didn’t think it was all that cluck-worthy.)

I recently went to Sissy’s with some friend so mine for a birthday party. I really didn’t think it was all that great, especially not for the price. The chicken was OK, definitely edible, but I didn’t feel like I had a flavor explosion in my mouth or anything along those lines. The mac and cheese was really heavy, and tasted like something I could pretty much get at home with Kraft shells and cheese. If I’m going to spend that kind of money, I expect to have an, “Oh dear Lord, where have you been all my life.” – moment, which was certainly not the case.
Now I did recently have the opportunity to try Velvet Taco, just across the street after a coworker had told me he thought it was better than Torchy’s. I tried it, doubtful, and couldn’t have agreed more with him. I tried the #1 and the #21. The #1 was pretty good, but the #21, was seriously incredible. The #21 is Steak and Eggs. I’ve never gone to a taco joint that had steak that was that flavorful and tender. Easily the best taco joint I’ve been to so far.
Just so I don’t sound like I’m going banana sandwich on Velvet Taco, if you get the chance to check out Rick’s Chophouse up in McKinney, TX you absolutely have to try their “Burger”. Easily one of the best burger’s I’ve ever had. I’d actually rank it slightly above Kenny’s Burger Joint, which until I tried Rick’s, held my top spot for burgers. Most of the food items at Rick’s can be a bit pricey, but if you are willing to spend a fair amount of money for whatever reason, try the elk, it’s too legit to quit.
