Memphis’s favorite chicken shack has landed in Fort Worth. Opening today, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken serves cayenne-spiked yardbird whose crispy, crackly, orange-hued crust has legions of fans.

Company president Wendy McCrory was on hand yesterday for a preview of the restaurant, Gus’s 17th location, noting that she felt the Fort Worth location most closely reflects the down-home character of the Memphis original. The menu is nearly identical at all locations: fried chicken combos or as individual pieces, a few simple sides (fried okra, mac and cheese, fried pickle chips, collard greens, for example), a handful of intensely sweet pies (including chocolate chess, coconut). The dilapidated decor might appear authentically retro, but it’s the result of a carefully created design package.

“I love Fort Worth and I love the people,” said McCrory. “The community is so nice and very supportive,” which plays into her hand to open additional area locations.

Prices are reasonable, the iced tea is strong, and beer is served. Want bubbles? Walk across the street to Kent & Co., where wine guru Chester Cox stands ready to pour you a glass of anything in the cellar, which means you have more than 200 wines to choose from.
