Open Mic: The Hub sports bar in Addison is not your average pub, says writer Josh Newton

Josh Newton asked if he could contribute to the Hatch. We said sure. J0sh has a passion for” good food, good drinks and good conversation,” which makes for a pretty good combo plate. So we sent Josh to a mixer in Addison to check out his chops. Here’s his take on the Hub.

Twenty-eight flat screens and 8 HD projectors are pretty impressive, right? Better yet, indoor virtual golf?

Those are the expectations of a sports bar, but I’m not the usual guy you find watching UFC or shooting pool. When I had the chance to check out the Hub Sports Bar & Grill during a recent media event, something even bigger (although she was quite petite) caught my eye – my attentive and friendly waitress.

Within minutes of walking in, I had an ice cold mug of beer in my hand. And, round two? She offered it  when I was a bit more than halfway through my first beer. That always scores points in my book.

With ten beers on tap, this is any sports-minded man’s haven. Unless you like your dirty martini with a chaser of Bud Light or jersey-clad fans cheering or jeering the last home team touchdown, explore another locale or blend in with a beer of your own. Even I had a bruskee!

Co-owner Kyle Hidell, a former Blue Mesa manager, opened the Hub about a year ago as a central spot for friends to gather. He kept that friendly vibe going when I met him, too. When you have a passion for your business, it always shows. Bravo, Kyle.

I loved chef Jonny Weisman’s smoked-then fried chicken wings tossed in some sassy sauces. The Hub just isn’t your average pub. There’s a $5 lunch menu and the kitchen stays open till midnight. By the way, those UFC fights are always no-cover.

Josh Newton is a small-town Arkansan who moved to Dallas for graduate school four years ago and decided to stick around. We’re glad he did. He has a passion for good food, drinks, friends and the great conversations that ensue.
